Xelco’s Finest:
I had never been to Financial district before, or at least not in my memory. It was the buffer zone between us and them. The one had to go through financial to get to Bayview or to get out to the rest of the world. I walked behind Eris, considering what drink I would be getting at this favorite bar of hers. I watched her strawberry blond hair sway back and forth over her tan shoulders. The gothic tattoo “Bellavicious” blinking in and out of view between the strings of her tank-top as her shapely body sauntered along. I would have been very attracted to her, if I wasn’t completely terrified of her. The past weeks had shown me just how dangerous she was. Probably the only vampire I had met who did not carry anything more than a skinning knife for protection. She had decapitated my cock-sure attitude as a human in only a matter of hours upon meeting.
Financial district smelled and sounded different than any other area of New Valencia I had been to. There was a pulsing beat like thousands of butterflies where swarming around my head. This distracting sound was only amplified by the sweet metallic smell in the air that made my stomach turn over in sudden hunger. Noticing my sudden discomfort, Eris gave me her usual knowing look. “Dat de humans here you feel’n,” she purred in her usual Cajun drawl.
“That noise?” I moaned, “and the smell?”
“Sure is darl’n,” she said with a squeeze of my shoulder. “I forgot dis da first time you in contact with em since you change. We gonna have to get some hema in you with a quickness.” With that she turned, her hair flowing around her head. “Hurry up, just follow me boy, we get you straight soon nuff.”
I hastened my step trying to keep up with the walking weapon that was my master. We headed towards a great golden globe statue. The word Xelco was circling the globe as if chasing its own tail. As we sauntered up to the building the intense sound and smell of humans became almost overbearing. Then an oppressively heavy hand landed on my shoulder, followed by the growl of a massive animal.
I turned to find a man who stood much higher than my six-feet. He looked more like a living muscle than a man. Thick scaring etched a pattern on his tanned face, and over his bald head, which made it look as though he was striped. His massive forearm pushed the limits of his dark suit as he grasped hard onto my shoulder. “This child yours Eris,” he growled.
With blinding speed, Eris grabbed a hold of the man’s hand ripping it from my shoulder, then twisting in it such a way as to make the mountain of a man yelp and whimper in pain. Three more men appeared behind the first, pulling weaponry from concealment on their bodies, and growling fiercely. The scarred man picked up Eris, spinning her in the air, untwisting his hand. Eris landed lightly, between the four and myself. “Ever de one fo games Hrodwulf,” she said cautiously.
The big man’s face broke into a toothy grin, and a deep rumbling laugh began to assault my ears. “We will have to do that again dearie,” he said gulping for breath between laughs. “Been a long time since we last sparred, and I owe you one.” Pointing to me he said, “you be careful in there kiddo, slip up, me and my pack gonna be hunt’n for you.” With that, he nodded to Eris, and signaled his group to back-off.
Eris’ hand touched mine that was glued to the gun on my back, reminding me to relax. “Don’t you worry Greg,” her Cajun accent was soft and almost sweet. “Hrodwulf is one of the oldest werewolves around, and he has no interest in you beyond his duties. He and his pack were designated as the protectors of this damn Xelco,” she said nodding towards the door of the building. “Without them, the humans in there wouldn’t have lasted very long. Shoot, without them wouldn’t be no treaty, and we still be liv’n as the hunters hunted.” She flipped her hair over her shoulder and started towards the door. “Now come on, we got us a scientist to see.”
The front hall of the Xelco building was much like any other office building. Soft music played, couches were dotted around for people waiting for appointments, potted plants were strategically places to help the ambiance. There were two striking differences in the décor and design. The first was the presence of two massive robots, armed to the teeth. They trained their guns on us as we walked in. Eris patted my arm shaking her head, letting me know not to worry. The second was the two large rotating doors between the robots that sported the sign “No Vampires” above them in bold lettering and several languages. Eris steered me off to the right, away from the standard reception table and towards another rotating door. She placed her hand on the pad to the right of the door, and I watched as the interior of the door slid to create an opening.
The lab we arrived in was much like any you might see in the movies. Beakers, and scales, and caged animals everywhere, microscopes and computers lined the walls. The barrage of human seemed to stop the moment we walked through that revolving door. Eris led me through the maze of seemingly empty work stations towards the back of the lab. She stopped at a refrigerator and stuck he head in. I admired the fine physique of my teacher as she clattered around in the cooler. She popped back out holding two beer bottles. “Heya Beatrise, got you a customer,” she shouted throwing me one of the beers. Silenced followed, only broken by Eris opening her beer. “She be out presently, enjoy that little one there, one of Beatrise’s special brews.”
I uncapped the bottle too the familiar hiss of released pressure. I put the drink to my lips and tipped it back for a tentative taste. The bubbly liquid slid down my throat, with the diet taste of hema. I was slightly stunned by the euphoric feeling that came over my body. The usual fire in my veins that came with hema was drowned out by a cool happiness. I felt light and joyous, even turning to hug my mistress who maintained her cool and collected manner. I tipped the bottle back again taking a deep draught and allowing the liquid happy to permeate my body. I turned to Eris with a silly grin, “this stuff is great!”
“Ha! Sure is,” she said taking another pull from her own. “Don’t tell, she can’t make enough for everyone.” Just as the last words left her lips I noticed two sharp green eyes peering at us over one of the white work stations. The eyes quickly disappeared and were replaced by a slender woman in a white lab coat. Her fingers were black with what looked like engine grease. It did not take away from the beauty that stood in front of me. With snow white skin, and soft brown hair, she looked like one of those models in a car magazine who has gotten ‘awl dwirty’. She cocked her head inspecting me.
“So how long exactly has it been since you were bitten?” She said poking and pinching me a bit as she circled me appraising me like livestock.
“Been here couple months now, I’d say, but its awfully hard to tell time these days,” I answered. “Hey what is with that anyway? Doesn’t the sun ever totally come out, or is it always cloudy here?”
“Well you certainly wouldn’t want the sun out child,” Beatrise responded. “Burn that silly smile right off your face, even with sunset, the sun is still a problem I can’t solve.” She sat down at one of the work stations and beckoned to me. “Luckily for us Ohai put in those clouds, it makes sunset actually work when it isn’t direct sunlight, but out in the rest of the world, sunset will maybe give you ten, twenty minutes of direct contact before you lose something.” She pulled out a syringe and began feeling around my forearm for a vein.
“Is that the stuff Matt gave me that first day Eris?” I asked turning to my mistress who had comfortably stretched out on the opposite station, the beer in hand, resting on the curve of her hips. A curious smile on her face let me know that the hema drink was effecting her now too.
“No, no, Matt doesn’t need to use sunset,” Beatrise responded. “I never have been able to break down what that damn purple stuff is, but if you can get your hands on it, save it. It doesn’t seem to be addictive like sunset, and none of that,” she paused contemplating her words, “Other stuff either.” The grease from her hands had left cute smudges on her dimpled face, not to mention on my arm. I watched as she removed the very dark blood from my body. She filled several tubes, marking them all and scribbling furiously on a pad next to her. “Well these should do it,” she proclaimed. “We’ll have you mapped out in no time! Ha, I may get to solve another mystery tonight, sorry Eris, hate to take your fun.”
“Show would like to know,” Eris said stretching on the table then rising. “Whoever that rouge is is stirring up a bunch of trouble. Wouldn’t be a problem in da old days, but now dey know where we are. Would be a war I reckon.”
“Yeh, but that would fun now too,” Beatrise responded. “It’s been too long since my sword tasted human. Not to complain, but makes me miss the old days, before the treaty.”
“Well, you could join us for our next stop darl’n, always entertaining,” An evil smile crossed Eris’ lips.
“Oh no, you know I prefer to tinker anyway. I was going to finish the upgrade I’ve been working on for your Hummer.”
“Oh, now, when you put it that way,” Eris pushed me towards the door. “We’ll get out of your hair then darl’n, maybe a rain check?” Beatrice was already gone. “Huh, she do that. Gets work on her mind and just turns to disappearing. We just be head’n on anyhow, you ready for some fun boy.” She let out a long whistle as we passed through the Xelco lobby again. “We gonna go get you some toys. Hope Caelan is in his usual bad mood, always more fun.”
